Virulence - "If This Isn't A Dream 1985-1989" CD

Southern California hardcore punk band Virulence was originally formed in 1985 by Scott Hill, Ken Pucci, Mark Abshire and Ruben Romano. They were heavily influenced by the heaviness of the Melvins, as well as the intense aggression of Black Flag and Bl'ast! After the band's demise in 1990, the members reformed under the moniker of FU MANCHU. This anthology contains all known recordings by Virulence. Besides the long lost classic album "If This Isn't a Dream", this CD contains early demos and vicious live recordings. All remastered and available on compact disc for the very first time. Extensive booklet with photos, flyers and liner notes from the band members. A very worthy induction into the chapter of early heavy music recordings.

Boris - Japanese Heavy Rock Hits 3 7" vinyl

The first 7", Volume One, "8", features two newly recorded tracks. On Side A, the title track "8" continues the spacey hard-rock sound established on their classic albums Pink and Smile, building from a mono, lo-fi wall of feedback into a ripping, slab of lush vocals, crunchy guitar and thunderous drums. Things get switched up on Side B with "Hey Everyone", a chewy bit of power-pop bubblegum that sees the band mining a much lighter source for their sound. It's a reminder that the most daring thing this band can do is record something so straight-forward it could easily be misconstrued as "alt-pop". Dont fret its still got a dark core and is unmistakably Boris! Gorgeous tip-on, heavy-weight cardboard jacket designed by Stephen O'Malley.

The second of three new Boris 7"s is available now! Volume Two, "H.M.A. - Heavy Metal Addict", features two newly recorded tracks. On Side A, the title track "H.M.A." is a heady slab of heavy metal tropes, alternating between spacey industrial SFX, hard-driving guitar and the mantra-like chants of the titular acronym. Side B continues with "Black Original", which echoes the spacey, electronic drive of "H.M.A.", but cuts out any pretense towards the heavy rock vibe of Boris' work, instead leaning towards a very basic electro-industrial approach. Cover features the controversial photo (ala Cold Lake era Celtic Frost!) of Atsuo. TRULY GRIMM!

The third and final chapter in BORIS' Japanese Heavy Rock Hits series. ..And it can be strongly argued that they have saved the best for last! The A-Side track is an exercise in beautiful simplicity, a downtempo mix of dulcet guitars and steady snare and hi-hat beats featuring guitarist WATA's sugary-sweet vocals. The flip is a slow droning number that is a spiritual cousin to classic Boris tracks like "Farewell" and "Fuzzy Reactor." $6.33 EACH

SUNN O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions CD

SUNN O))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled Monoliths & Dimensions. The album showcases the core guitar duo - Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the SUNN O))) sound to epic new levels. The band also collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane’s African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock’s Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There's also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman's choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney.

The album is not "SUNN O))) with strings" or "metal meets orchestra" material. The band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear, stating that the end product is "the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape" The album was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn & Mell Dettmer at various points over the last 2 years. As can be expected the packaging for this album is beautiful and appropriately compliments the audio content. Jewel case is sheathed by a velum O-card. Expansive 24 page booklet with velum cover and specially coated heavy-weight paper. Truly a site to behold!

ORAKULUM was originally composed for a live performance collaboration with the New York sculptor Banks Violette at the Maureen Paley Gallery in London, June of 06. Violette created sculptural representation of SUNN O)))s entire backline in cast resin and salt, including amplifier stacks, instruments, effects & accompaniments. In addition, black laquered stage platforms and sound panels were created as a basis for the groups actual backline setup, and a selection of drawings were presented within the context. The result of this performance and collaboration, which was conducted in a sealed gallery space, was intended to generate a feeling of absence, loss and a phantom of what once was.

The A side of this lp: BELUROL PUSZTIT was also recorded at this session. Initially this song was created for the "Jukebox Buddha" compilation as it features the use of the tone generating Buddha Boxes within the track. In the style of sunn 0))) these boxes were run through the sunn backline and recorded at maximum volume which of course yielded maximum results! BELUROL PUSZTIT " also features extra "instrumentation" from Atsuo Mizuno (Boris) on drums and Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins, Thrones) on jackhammer (!!!) !!!!

The 180 gram vinyl is packaged in a thick printed innersleeve and thick cardboard gatefold jacket. Stark, stunning photographs of Banks Violettes' sculptures adorn all sides of the gatefold, innersleeve including a drawing by Banks on the innersleeve! The vinyl version will be the only "official" release of these recordings.

Thorrs' Hammer - Dommedagsnatt LP

To commemorate the forthcoming Thorrs' Hammer reunion shows in the UK Southern Lord is reissuing the debut (and only ) recordings from Thorrs' Hammer! Thorr's Hammer was formed in Ballard, Washington by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley during winter 1994-1995. Soon after,Runhild Gammelsæter, then 17-year-old Norwegian exchange student, joined the band as vocalist/lyricist. The band reached its final form when Jamie Sykes and James Hale joined. The band was active only for six weeks during which it played two gigs and recorded a demo and an EP entitled Dommedagsnatt. The band disbanded after Runhild's return to Oslo, Norway. The paramount importance of this raw album can not be appropriately conveyed in words. It was not only the very first album released on Southern Lord it was the catalyst for the majority of the output from both Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, etc..). We are proud to present to you a reissue of the album on 180 gram clear vinyl packaged in a gatefold sleeve with metallic silver embossing with printed innersleeve. In the interest of documenting exceptional and vibrant live performances by our artists, we are proud to present a exclusive, vinyl only live album from Earth.  Comprised of two tracks from a live radio broadcast on KFJC (New Years Eve 2007) and two track from a live performance in Vienna on there 2008 European tour.  Of particular note is that Trey Spruance (Secret Chief 3, Faxed Head) plays Baritone Guitar and sitar on the KFJC recordings. WINOS' FIRST SOLO ALBUM IS UPON US!

Over the last 25 years Scott "Wino" Weinrich has defined heavy music and is truly the Godfather of the movement. Starting with the Obsessed, and Saint Vitus and onto his mind-blowing power trios: Spirit Caravan and The Hidden Hand his virtuosity on six strings is matched perfectly with his soulful vocals and powerful lyrics. But as us Wino freaks know he has always graciously shared the spotlight with his band members. Even though it was Wino we came to see and hear he seemed to understand the power of the chemistry of the bands he was leading. His selflessness seems unnecessary considering his talents but it was his decision to equally share the glory.

After the demise of his last group: The Hidden Hand, Wino did not rest. With new found energy he completed the writing of many new songs and decided to enlist the help of some friends to help realize his new musical vision. The idea was not to start a new power trio with a new name as before. This time it was about finding players who would help realize his songs the way he wanted them. This more "Wino"- focused direction was fleshed out with the help of 2 amazing musicians: Jean Paul Gaster (Clutch, The Bakerton Group) on drums and Jon Blank (Rezin) on bass. "Punctuated Equilibrium" was recorded by J. Robbins who has worked extensively with both the Hidden Hand and Clutch in the past.

Finally! The long-awaited vinyl version of “God Luck and Good Speed�?, Weedeater’s masterpiece of whiskey and weed-soaked doom, is available to order. Fronted by famed madman and bass virtuoso "Dixie" Dave Collins, this three-piece juggernaut has been eating audiences alive for more than 10 years now. After two critically acclaimed full length releases recorded by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins, High On Fire, etc.) and released respectively on Berserker and Crucial Blast Records, "God Luck And Good Speed" was Weedeater’s debut full-length for Southern Lord Recordings.

All but one of the songs on the album were recorded and produced by the legendary Steve Albini (Neurosis, High On Fire, Nirvana, etc.) at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. The remaining track, "Alone", was recorded by Mike Dean (Corrosion of Conformity) and simply consists of an acoustic bass track, a banjo track, and vocally some of Dixie's best somber and sub-baritone rasping. The mastering was executed by John Golden (Neurosis, Melvins, Pelican, etc.) and the finished product is nothing short of amazing.

The sound is gigantic and both the production and recording skillfully capture the intense experience of a Weedeater show while achieving tones that will swallow you whole. Weedeater fans have been waiting for this a long time and they won’t be disappointed. The vinyl is limited to 1500 copies and comes pressed on 180 gram heavy vinyl, with deluxe gatefold packaging. Orcustus - S/T

After nearly 3 years in the making the debut full-length album from Norwegian Black Metal group: Orcustus is finally unleashed! Orcustus was formed in early 2002 by vocalist and songwriter Taipan. Derived from Orcus, meaning Hades or Hell, the band name was taken from an early 1990's underground fanzine of the same name published by former Emperor drummer Bård Faust. Co-founding members of the band were Gorgoroth guitarists Tormentor and Infernus, and drummer Dirge Rep of Enslaved/Gehenna. The band's first demo, simply called Demo 2002, was recorded and released in late 2002, and limited to 1000 copies. The material for the demo had been written by Taipan in the years before Orcustus was formed, when he was active in his former band, Abattoir (Nor). The demo quickly sold out, and garnered praise from well-known figures in the black metal scene, such as Fenriz of Darkthrone and Frost of Satyricon. The demo also found its ways into the claws of Southern Lord Records, and was immediately released on the 7" vinyl EP World Dirtnap in 2003. In 2005 Southern Lord released their second 7" vinyl EP, Wrathrash. Both these slabs of blackened sickness quickly sold out upon their release and are sought after gems in the Black Metal underground. In 2007/2008 Orcustus triumphed over many obstacles and psycho-logical trauma to lay down the filth that is this their debut full-length debut album. Cloaked in black mystery and veiled in dark secrecy the beast that is Orcustus has left a noxious rotting corpse for the rabid hordes of evil to devour. $12 each.

sunn 0))) - Dømkirke 2xLP

Last year sunn 0))) was invivted to perform at a ancient cathedral in Bergen Norway . The performance was captured via 24 track mobile recording and the resuluts were pressed onto double 180 gram vinyl. This recording will be available exclusively on vinyl only. There will not be a digital release (cd or downloads). Pure analog! The 0))) lineup for this performance includes Attila Csihar (Mayhem) on vocals, Steve Moore (Earth, Ascend) on the churchs' legendary pipe organ and Norwegian native Lasse Marhaug on electronics.

The packaging for "Dømkirke" was designed with the utmost attention to detail and quality that perfectly compliments the audio content. Each 180 gram vinyl comes in a heavy stock, full color inner sleeve that features stunning photographs from the performance. The cover of the gatefold jackets feature exclusive art by Tanya Stene (Burzum, Ulver, Darkthrone).

The jackets themselves are ultra-durable extra thick cardboard stock with thick, luxurious lamination. These were modeled after the Impulse! labels' LP jackets from the '60s. This package is durable, built to last and serves as the perfect shelter for this archival release.

Nicholas Mollerhaug, the festival curator, wrote these liner notes for the album:

"Our idea behind this concert was to commission a piece of music from Sunn O))) referring to the gothic gregorian hymns of the Late Middle Ages. Hymns that flourished Bergen Cathedral in its earliest years: The age of the Great Famine and The Black Plague. The gregorian hymns of this time reflected the despair, the terrors and darkness of the world. Musically the hymns consisted of long slow lines of unison melodies. The unisonity, the dark mood and the slow melodic development are all elements that also can be traced back to Sunn O)))'s musical universe. These parallells between Sunn O))) and the medieval times gave birth to this commission - premiered at the grand final of Borealis Festival 2007.

The Bergen Domkirke is dedicated to the Norwegian king and patron saint Olav (995-1030). The church was built around 1150. In the 1240s it was given to Fransiscan beggar munks. After fires in 1248 and 1270 the building was extended. With the financial help of king Magnus Lagabøte (1263-1280) the church got its present form and was finished in 1301. The very same king is buried in the chansel of the church. After the reformation the church became the cathedral of Bergen. It was then again struck by fire in 1463 and 1702. A cannon ball in the the church tower is a reminisence of the Battle of Bergen Bay in 1665.

This record documents what happens when aesthetic openness and lack of prejudice rules in a medieval cathedral.

Without these values inhabited in the legendary kantor of Bergen Cathedral- Magnar Mangersnes - this concert would never have been possible.

Ascend - "Ample Fire Within" CD

ASCEND is a new collaborative musical project between Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Eagle Twin) and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Goatsnake, Engine Kid).

Both have been making music that has crossed paths several times in the last 19 years.(!!!) The most notable being during the 90s when Andersons' band Engine Kid toured with and shared a split album with Densleys' band Iceburn. During that time both were heavily experimenting with the fusion of jazz (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, John Coltrane) and the dark behemoth tones of influences such as The Melvins, Gore, Slint, and the Caspar Bratzmann Massaker.

ASCEND re-visits some of the tones, and moods of their past works as well as traveling into uncharted territory all done with the utmost focus on heaviness and power.

Special guest appearances on this album by Andy Patterson (drums), Steve Moore (aka Stebmo, also in Earth and often times : sunn 0))) ) trombone, organ and wurlitzer, Bubba Dupree (Void) guitar AND none other than Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) put down some incredible lead work! 180 gram deluxe vinyl version of this recent live documentation. In May of 2007 the mighty SUNN 0))) embarked on a Pacific Rim tour that included performances in Australia and Japan. The lineup for this tour included the core Sunn 0))) duo: Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley plus T.O.S. (Moog), Oren Ambarchi (analog effects and supplemental guitar) and vokillist Attila Csihar. Upon arrival in Sydney, Sunn 0))) invited one of their favourite black metal artists: Striborg over from Tasmania to collaborate with them during their show.

This unholy meeting went over very well and the inaugural ritual was a warm up gig at the Toft In Town club one evening before the larger gig at the Hi-Fi Bar (w/brethren: Boris). The results of this collaboration was a completely improvisational, vicious audio and visual assault on the sold out, standing room only audience. This was among the first time that Sunn 0))) had worked with live drums and the outcome was completely unprecedented. The whole event was recorded live to 24-track/multi-track. Afterwards Oren Ambarchi edited, sequenced and overhauled the EQ to make it as brutal as possible.

LEVIATHAN creator: WREST, steps above and below his usual recording evokation of Leviathan to unleash a entirely different incarnate: LURKER OF CHALICE. With Leviathan: Wrest has poisoned the US Black Metal Underground with several now legendary works of pure black art. After a elongated eternity of anticipation it is with extreme relief that we are able to announce that:
Crippled Lucifer: 10 Psalms For Our Lord of Light is finally done and ready to be devoured! These recordings are the roots of much of what has grown into the current existence of Southern Lord alumni: sunn 0))), Khanate, Goatsnake, Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine etc.. as well as: KTL, Asva, etc..

For the uninitiated: ...After the breakup of the cult doom/death band Thorr's Hammer in 1995, Stephen O'Malley, Greg Anderson and Jamie Sykes formed Burning Witch. The band then added G. Stuart Dahlquist and vocalist Edgy 59, rounding out their lineup. Anderson left the band and moved to Los Angeles to form the band Goatsnake. In 1996, the band (w/out Anderson) recorded songs with Steve Albini, which would become the Towers... EP. This collection would actually not see a formal release on 12" until 1998 on Slap A Ham Records. After the sessions for these songs, Sykes left the band and was replaced by B.R.A.D.

The sessions that followed the Albini recordings resulted in the Rift.Canyon.Dreams EP, which would prove to be the final recordings by the band, as they broke up soon after the disc was completed. It was released on 12" by Merciless Records. Shortly after disbanding: " Crippled Lucifer" a compilation CD of the two EPs, was released in 1998 by the then new label Southern Lord Records. It was the second release of the label, the first being Thorrs' Hammer. Burning Witch briefly reformed for their last shows in the fall of 1998 after which Edgy 59 left the band. O'Malley reunited with Anderson to form Sunn O))), and Dahlquist joined both in sunn 0))) for their first two albums (The Grimm Robe Demos Void) then briefly joined Anderson in Goatsnake for the "Flower of Disease" album.

This deluxe double cd re-issue of all Burning Witch recordings will serve as a respectful epitaph for this incredible band. It compiles both the Towers and Rift Canyon Dreams albums which were on the the original Crippled Lucifer release PLUS the following out of print material:

"Communion" and "the Bleeder" from: split CD with Goatsnake (Hydra Head Records 2000) OUT OF PRINT
and
"Rift Canyon Dreams" from: split 12" with Asva (Dos Fatales Records 2004) OUT OF PRINT

Helmed by the master rhythm section of Chris Hakius (drums) and Al Cisneros (bass) (both formerly of Sleep) Pilgrimage contains four brand new songs featuring the gropus unique use of riff, cadence and chant. Lyrical themes address the processes of mind, psychic reality, astral and causal planes of being, and the nature of the soul. Pilgrimage was recorded and engineered by Steve Albini at his Electrial Audio studios in Chicago and produced by the band. Mastering was handled by Bob Weston (also of Shellac). Of particular note is how much the song-writing has developed and in turn makes the dynamics of the songs much more intensely powerful. The present journey finds the band expanding their vision into new territories.

Despite the use of glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, percussion and guitars, its startling that the world created is still unmistakably his own, and that there is such a cohesion of vision throughout the albums three lengthy pieces. Weedeater-"God Luck And Good Speed" CD

After two critically acclaimed full length releases under their belts recorded by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins, High On Fire, etc.) and released respectively on Berserker and Crucial Blast Records, the latest and highly anticipated album, "God Luck And Good Speed" is upon us! All but one of the songs on the album were recorded and produced by the legendary Steve Albini (Neurosis, High On Fire, Nirvana, etc.) at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. The sound is gigantic and both the production and recording skillfully capture the intense experience of a Weedeater live show while achieving tones that will swallow you whole. The non Albini session track, "Alone", was recorded by Mike Dean (Corrosion of Conformity) and simply consists of an acoustic bass
track, a banjo track, and vocally some of Dixie's best somber and sub-baritone rasping. The mastering was executed by John Golden (Neurosis, Melvins, ,etc.) and the finished product is nothing short of amazing. Arik Roper provided the art and it is presented on gold foil embossed on a 5" mini-gatefold, thick cardboard jacket. It is an honor for us to present this massively heavy album to the Lord hordes! $12

Hailing from France,...Glorior Belli came out from the dark in 2002. The first demo "Evil Archaic Order" was released in June 2004, followed by the first album "Ô Lavdate Dominvs" in May 2005. Despite their exquisitely filthy & brutal nature, their recordings emit a mesmerizing otherworldly resonance that cannot be denied. An omnious rumble & surge.....Always moving forward with various points of tension & terror!  Glorior Bellis' whole aesthetic has a strangely melodic bent that helps it to stand out from other black metal records. Somehow they manage to write bestial art that is ultra- catchy while at the same time being suffocatingly black & grim.  "Manifesting the Raging Beast" is their second full length album and first for their new label-coven: Southern Lord.   Members of Glorior Belli are also involved in  other projects such as: MERRIMACK, DISIPLIN, BLACK FLAME, WOLFE, and OBSCURUS ADVOCAM.

It took a really long time (6+months) but we think you will find the wait to worth it! Each album is a double vinyl (180 gram) set. Each vinyl comes in a specific picture inner-sleeve. These vinyls/inner-sleeves are sheltered in a double-wide spine jacket. The front cover of each has the bands logo embossed on metallic foil/silver (Genevieve) or black (Northsuite) onto actual velvet stock!! Hence the proclamation: Velvet Jacket. The design was assembled by Stephen O'Malley from imagery provided by VC and the licensing label: Full Moon Productions. The packaging and presentation is among our best, maybe our finest hour.

In the late eighties …Before the mighty formation of Sleep: Al Cisneros (Bass/Vocals), Chris Hakius, and Matt Pike (Guitar) played together (along with Thomas Choi/Guitar) in Asbestosdeath. Asbestosdeath are the roots of the oak that branched into the massive creation of not only Sleep but of course OM (Al and Chris), High On Fire (Matt) and ItisI/Operator Generator (Thomas Choi). Asbestosdeath was short-lived and only existed long enough to record 4 songs that were released on 2 separate 7’s. One: “Unclean” was self-released by the band, the other: “Dejection” was released by Profane Existence. These recordings are long out of print…buried by time and dust. On the specific request of the band Southern Lord has been chosen to unearth these recordings and make them available once again! "Unclean, Dejection album contains every Asbestosdeath studio recording on one specially priced release. The recordings were carefully mastered from original source material (ie: the vinyl!) by Mell Dettmer (Earth, sunn 0))), Altar, etc..)
It is our honor to unveil this compact disc properly documenting these sacred hymns! Be prepared for divine punishment!
